Carrie and David’s Popshop

posted by Steve Bowbrick

I like this a lot. I think Carrie and David are telling us they take kids’ media seriously. They’ve made the scary transition from primetime to daytime to playtime and the result is clever and life-enhancing: a show encouraging little kids to sing and dance and make music. Of course, I could be wrong. The Fame Academy wash-out could have wrecked their careers, Carrie could have an eating disorder (she’s pretty skinny) and they could have secretly divorced when it all went pear-shaped. Children’s TV could be a final desperate bid for fame—smiles to mask the crippling sadness and all that. I doubt it, though. I think this is the real thing: non-patronising children’s TV with a sense of fun. Lovely.
